Two-phase Flows in Bioreactors and Fermentors [Webinar]

In the February installment of the CFD Compass Webinar Series, M-Star President John Thomas presented on predicting gas-liquid mass transfer rates in reactors using a bubble parcel model. Viewers learned how lattice-Boltzmann simulations can optimize aeration and fluid flow in aerobic and microaerobic fermentation processes, enhancing productivity and predictive accuracy.

Of particular interest were these innovative offerings:

  • An order-of-magnitude reduction in runtime, compared to a bubble-by-bubble tracking
  • Mass transfer and gas hold-up predictions which agree with measured values of identical systems
  • A novel coarse-graining approach for modeling high gas flow rate fermenters
